The Living Desert tour (half day activity)
It was sand dunes that kept Namibia so pristine. When explorers landed, they couldn’t cross the desert, saving Namibia from colonialism until the late 19th century. Some ships turned around. Others perished and left behind wooden skeletons. It’s these sand dunes that you now cross, weaving a journey through the endless ridges and peaks, troughs and summits. Tiny oases dot the journey, shocks of green that challenge the red rainbow. Mountains rise and fall with the dunes, shimmering towers that guide your trip towards Sossusvlei. These dunes come alive at sunset, flickering through a euphoric prism of vibrant color. Climb the ridge for an aerial view, hundreds of miles of untamed desert offering a phantasmal panorama.
A second day, early morning before sunrise, drive towards Sossusvlei and Deadvlei – a place of the highest dunes in the World, set in the midst of the World’s oldest desert. Unique chance for spectacular landscape photography! Climbing scenic Dune 45, while enjoying incredible desert vistas and ever changing scenery of the Namib. Off-road trail takes us to Deadvlei where ancient, dried up acacias stand amidst the orange dunes creating surreal landscape. Optional hiking the ‚Big Daddy’ dune and afterwards visit to Sossusvlei with optional hiking the ‚Big Mama’ dune. After lunch, hike through spectacular rock formations of the Sesriem Canyon
Morning Excursion to SossusvleI, visit of Sesriem Canyon, guided nature walks
After morning coffee and rusks, head out to explore the spectacular Sossusvlei. Enter the Namib- Naukluft National Park through a private gate with marvelous views of the Namib Sand Sea. Enroute, you will see small game such as oryx, bat-eared fox, brown hyena and more, during your guided drives. Visit the stunning white pans of Deadvlei, and the towering golden-orange sand dunes of Sossusvlei. Once you have worked up an appetite, enjoy lunch on a beautifully laid out table under the canopy of camelthorn trees. Later, saunter along the Sesriem Canyon floor admiring its beautiful formations before returning to lodge as the sunlight fades away.
The time finally comes to bid the desert goodbye as we drive back to Windhoek. Looking out the window at the retreating Namib Desert, the ochre mountains and valleys, and the enormous uninhabited space aside you, the magic of Namibia takes ahold of you as you promise yourself to return one day.
